The Soviet Town of Paldiski

Favorites

The town of Paldiski on the northern coast of Estonia was founded by Peter I in 1718 as a sea fortress. From 1968 the town was closed because the Soviet Union’s nuclear submariners training centre was there, and Paldiski became a secret town surrounded by a barbed-wire fence. The last Russian navy ship left the town in 1994. The peninsula of Paldiski is a very beautiful place with a dramatic 25-meter high limestone cliff.
